The sponsorship came on the heels of a successful pilot project with Swiss Re Institute and its Cat Perils unit to improve GEM’s hazard model for Italy using the OpenQuake engine for Swiss Re’s in-house model development. The project -- based on the SHARE European earthquake hazard model -- was successfully completed in September 2019 and set the basis for the Swiss Re sponsorship. With this renewed collaboration, Swiss Re will continue to use GEM datasets on exposure and vulnerability for reference, and work on integrating the OQ engine together with GEM and publicly available OQ hazard models in their model development process. "Swiss Re shares GEM's vision of a world more resilient to natural catastrophes and we're proud to support this truly global initiative. GEM provides state-of-the-art science and software tools and has become a valuable forum for open collaboration within the risk assessment community. By using the same open software for common tasks, the community can focus its efforts on analyzing and improving data and models. We believe that the pioneering work done by GEM will lead to a new era of collaboration and transparency on seismic hazard and risk assessment." With this collaboration, GEM will not only have the opportunity to develop products for the insurance sector but also demonstrate that it can be done in a mutually beneficial way,” John Schneider, Secretary General, on partnering with Swiss Re for insurance loss modelling. A partnership built from past successes Swiss Re Foundation, a separate legal entity of Swiss Re Group, funded the South America Risk Assessment (SARA) project implemented collaboratively by GEM from 2013-2015. It focused mainly on risk assessment capacity development in South America. Local experts and stakeholders with GEM scientists and engineers carried out activities such as compilation of earthquake catalogues, creation of risk metrics and country risk profiles, and estimation of social vulnerability using GEM tools and products. Recently, a successful pilot project for Italy to improve GEM’s hazard module using the OpenQuake engine for Swiss Re’s in-house model development was completed in September. Way forward Swiss Re, Hannover Re and GEM are currently collaborating on a pilot project to implement national and regional GEM models in the OASIS loss modelling framework for risk quantification and a transparent approach in loss estimation using GEM models and tools. The goal is to bring the models up to industry standards and to have a market-ready model by Spring of 2020.     News Hands-on with the OpenQuake engine at the 4th GEM Annual Risk Workshop By: ​ ​ Jul 2, 2018 ​ Share Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn ​ From November 20th to 22nd, the GEM Foundation hosted the fourth edition of the Risk Workshop. The annual event brings together GEM partners from both the private and public sectors around the world to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate new features and improvements on the OpenQuake suite of tools, as well as the latest developments in the hazard and risk models and datasets. This year, the workshop had the following specific goals: Explore GEM's risk datasets, models and tools Present GEM’s Risk Modeler’s Toolkit to derive fragility and vulnerability models Prepare exposure and vulnerability models for the OpenQuake-engine using the Input Preparation Toolkit (https://platform.openquake.org/ipt/) Perform seismic risk analysis and scenario loss estimations using the OpenQuake-engine Contribute to GEM’s Global Risk Modeling effort The event featured presentations from the GEM team, and several scenario risk calculations using the OpenQuake engine. The exercises allowed participants to experiment first hand how the engine works with the GEM Risk Team verifying and checking the results. Participants from ARUP (United Kingdom) demonstrated how some of the GEM tools were employed in the assessment of earthquake risk in Kyrgyzstan as part of a World Bank project. The partners from NSET (Nepal) presented how Nepal is recovering from the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, and preparing other towns for future events by collecting detailed information regarding the built up environment. Aspen Re (Switzerland/UK) shared how GEM tools and models can be used to better understand the drivers of uncertainty in CAT modeling. Finally, Dr. Christopher Burton from Auburn University (USA) highlighted the need to go beyond the physical risk, and to incorporate the social aspects in the evaluation of earthquake threat. The workshop also had the participation of other experts from ETH, INGV, EUCENTRE, Zurich, CICESE, SCOR, AXA, PartnerRe, OYO, Pacific Disaster Center and NKUA. On the last day the participants enjoyed a guided tour of the EUCENTRE Foundation laboratories led by Dr. Filippo Dacarro, Lab Director. The tour included a visit to the old and new shake table, inaugurated in September 2017. The outcomes of the training were positive: for instance, Suman Pradhan and Kirty Tiwari from NSET, Nepal, mentioned the importance of the GEM Taxonomy for their work, and complimented the GEM Staff for the success of the event. They committed to returning to Nepal and train their colleagues on how to use OpenQuake.     News Understanding seismic risk through capacity development and knowledge sharing webinar draws hundreds of participants from around the world By: ​ ​ Jul 6, 2021 ​ Share Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn ​ The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation TREQ Project, with support from USAID, presented the progress of the urban earthquake hazard and risk assessments, and capacity development efforts in Quito (Ecuador), Cali (Colombia) and Santiago de los Caballeros (Dominican Republic) on July 9th 2021 via Zoom webinar. The event featured the USGS earthquake hazard- and consequences-driven scenarios for the pilot cities, the results of the OpenQuake engine training in hazard and risk assessment, and lessons from the integration of TREQ’s educational and training materials into university courses. Building on the success of the collaborative efforts of the South America Risk Assessment project (SARA) in 2013 and Central America and the Caribbean Risk Assessment project (CCARA) in 2017, the TREQ team, in collaboration with local experts from Quito, Cali and Santiago de los Caballeros, are updating the hazard and risk models of the pilot cities using more detailed hazard and risk information. The project results are expected to set the foundation for enhancing earthquake hazard and risk assessment in other cities and urban areas in the region. The results of the study will be open and accessible to a wide-range of users – from risk analysts, emergency planners and managers to researchers, modelers and the public at large. While most of the models will be available, there will be some limitations due to privacy considerations of local governments. Since 2020, the TREQ team has trained more than 400+ individuals from almost 60 countries - the majority from the countries where the pilot studies are located, namely Ecuador, Colombia and Dominican Republic - and produced training and educational materials that are being adapted for university courses through the project’s Training the Trainers component. The change provides each organisation with a voting position on the Governing Board. It also provides an opportunity for them to allocate a portion of their sponsorship funds toward projects that are of particular interest to them, and are in line with GEM’s strategic priorities. Willis Towers Watson is one of the founding members of GEM from the private sector. GEM and WTW have been working together for more than a decade to develop and promote a better understanding of earthquake risk through research and the application of science. WTW is now represented by Stuart Callam, Programme Director, WTW Research Network & Climate and Resilience Hub. We thank Hélène Galy, Head of Willis Research Network (WRN), for representing WTW as an Advisor Sponsor for the past 4 years and for developing a strong collaboration between GEM and the WRN during that time.
