The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation has been selected among 10 pioneering teams recognised by the World Food Programme Innovation Accelerator for their focus on crisis relief and resilience, contributing to a hunger-free world. This initiative aims to enhance global efforts toward a safer and stronger world by addressing acute food insecurity while promoting community resilience. With an astounding 1400+ applications from 122 countries, the selection process identified GEM Foundation's commitment to seismic safety and community resilience among the groundbreaking innovations. GEM's efforts align with this critical initiative, amplifying seismic safety measures and strengthening community resilience in earthquake-prone areas. Vitor Silva, Head of Risk Engineering expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “Being selected among numerous applicants reflects the value of GEM products to identify vulnerable communities, and act rapidly when destructive events occur. As part of this celebration, the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation was invited to contribute a paper, highlighting the longstanding collaboration between the two institutions. “GEM’s collaboration with INGV and its contributions to the Annals of Geophysics reflect our shared commitment to advancing earthquake science and promoting global seismic risk reduction,” said Licia Faenza, Researcher, National Earthquake Centre - INGV . “Their participation in INGV’s 25th year underscores the value of partnerships in addressing seismic challenges.” GEM Secretary General Helen Crowley authored the paper, “A Brief Overview of the Past, Present, and Future of the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation,” which explores GEM’s evolution from a groundbreaking initiative to a leading authority in seismic hazard and risk modeling. Presented in Rome on October 29, 2024, and live streamed on YouTube, the paper highlighted GEM’s significant impact on global disaster risk reduction efforts. “The INGV’s milestone year provided a platform to reflect on GEM’s contributions over the past 15 years and share our vision for the future,” said Helen, whilst reflecting on her presentation. “As the challenges of seismic risk grow more complex, GEM remains committed to building resilience through innovation, collaboration, and practical solutions.” Past, Present, and Future: The Paper’s Key Highlights The paper begins by revisiting GEM’s incorporation in 2009 as a global public-private partnership with the bold ambition of democratising seismic risk information. It reflects on how GEM’s collaborative framework brought together scientists, engineers, and policymakers from diverse backgrounds to develop the first truly global seismic hazard and risk models. These efforts culminated in the first release of the Global Seismic Hazard and Risk Maps in 2018, a landmark achievement that remains a reference for risk managers worldwide. At present, GEM’s work has evolved to address emerging challenges. Initiatives such as the Global Seismic Hazard Mosaic and regional collaborations including those with the USGS and INGV demonstrate GEM’s commitment to enhancing hazard models and extending coverage to underserved regions. On the risk front, GEM’s Global Seismic Risk Model provides critical insights into the potential impacts of earthquakes, helping decision-makers prioritise mitigation efforts and allocate resources effectively. Equally significant is the organisation’s focus on developing tools that are both scientifically robust and accessible to stakeholders, exemplified by the OpenQuake engine, which supports applications ranging from earthquake scenarios to risk-informed policymaking. Looking ahead, the paper outlines an ambitious vision guided by three core strategic objectives for the next five years. First, GEM is committed to enhancing and expanding its Global Seismic Hazard and Risk Models to address new and emerging challenges, ensuring they remain a vital resource for policymakers and engineers worldwide. Second, strengthening partnerships with diverse stakeholders - government agencies, academic institutions, and private organisations - remains central to promoting disaster risk reduction and integrating seismic risk into broader climate resilience efforts. Finally, GEM emphasises the development of educational resources and training programs tailored to the needs of high-risk, low-resource regions, empowering communities and decision-makers with the knowledge and tools to reduce seismic risk. News USAID-GEM project aims to build capacity for urban earthquake risk assessment in Latin America and the Caribbean region By: Dec 18, 2019 Share Facebook LinkedIn TREQ project locations USAID through OFDA recently signed an agreement with GEM in the implementation of Training and Communication for Earthquake Risk Assessment or TREQ project. TREQ is designed to demonstrate how earthquake hazard and risk assessment can inform decision makers in the development of risk reduction policies, as well as how earthquake risk can be properly communicated to stakeholders and the public in general. The project will run from 2019-2021 in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region covering the following locations: Quito (Ecuador), Cali (Colombia), and Santiago de los Caballeros (Dominican Republic) for earthquake hazard and risk assessment in urban centres. For the training, educational and communication component, activities will involve the general public and academics in Latin America and The Caribbean, Asia and Africa. The project targets a wide spectrum of stakeholders, categorized into four main groups: decision-makers and public authorities, practitioners and engineers; researchers and academia; and the general public. Collaboration and openness – keys to success of the global earthquake model EVENT SUMMARY GLOBAL EARTHQUAKE MODEL 2018 A Step Toward Earthquake Resilience 5th of December 2018 | 0900h - 1800h CAR College, Pavia, Italy Collaboration and openness – keys to success of the global earthquake model GEM scientists presented the global earthquake hazard and risk maps in Pavia, Italy to more than 130 delegates around the world from public, private and academic organizations that participated in the GEM2018 launch on December 5th. The maps and the underlying data behind them will enhance global disaster risk reduction strategies according to representatives of UNISDR and World Bank/GFDRR. “This is a great contribution towards putting to the public an open data, collaborative effort with many partners on the best available data on earthquake risk around the world,” said Ricardo Mena UNISDR Chief of Support and Monitoring of Sendai Framework Implementation. Emma Phillips, Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist from GFDRR’s Innovation Lab added, “These products and tools that are coming out of GEM can really help in the process of making informed decisions. The way we think about risk in an open data aspect is very useful when we engage with our clients because we are able to rely on this open information that GEM provides.” GEM, a non-profit organization that started as a pilot project in 2009, has collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders to deliver the global maps, data and analysis tools – bannered by the OpenQuake engine, the software used to run calculations and build the global mosaic of models. Marco Pagani, GEM Hazard Team Leader, presented the global earthquake hazard map , the first of its kind since GSHAP was presented in 1999, highlighting the differences and similarities as well as the methods and tools used to complete the new map. Vitor Silva, GEM Risk Team Leader, presented the global earthquake risk map comprised of national and regional exposure and vulnerability models. It is the most comprehensive global assessment of earthquake risk to date. The products released at the event are as follows: 1. Hazard and risk maps (print and PDF/PNG downloadable files) 2. Interactive map tool Global hazard map with PGA value for selected cell Global exposure with number & value of buildings per country Global risk map with average annual economic losses per country, link to risk profile 3. V1.0 Country Profiles for around 120 countries (PDF download) 4. Updated Active Fault Database (on github) 5. Updated vulnerability Database (300 functions) “The GEM family is very pleased with the products that have been released today. But the more significant achievement was the process on how we got here, the principles that guided us: collaboration, credibility, openness and public good,” said John Schneider – GEM Secretary General. More products and enhancements are planned for the next two years such as the availability of all the models in OpenQuake engine, improved exposure data and vulnerability functions as well as updated Country Risk Profiles. Peer-reviewed technical papers for the many contributions to the earthquake hazard and risk models will be published in a special issue of Earthquake Spectra in early 2020. Publications Understanding GEM's potential beneficiaries Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2012 | Report The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation is now at a point in its organizational history when it is ready to begin developing tools and resources for individuals who are not earthquake risk assessment experts. The research project described in this report was designed to learn about the needs of these individuals worldwide, in order to provide information that could help to guide GEM’s future tool and resource development. This project is an important initiative, as user needs are often not assessed prior to the development of scientific or technical tools. That lack of user needs assessment has contributed to a gap between what decision-makers and end users say that they want from science and technology, and what science and technology offer to decision-makers and end users. Fortunately, the gulf between scientific communities and policy-maker and practitioner communities is not so great that it cannot be overcome. Engaging in dialogue and needs assessments—such as the one described in this report—across the divide is one of the best ways to begin to build bridges between these communities.
