    News Governing Board meeting 2018: new partners, GRM2018 status and expert panel review report By: Jul 12, 2018 Share Facebook LinkedIn The GEM Governing Board officially welcomes a new Advisor sponsor - PartnerRe into the GEM family during its first meeting in 2018 held from June 28-29 at the GEM headquarters in Pavia, Italy. PartnerRe joined GEM earlier this year. Paul Della Marta, official representative of PartnerRe, said, “This new partnership with GEM further strengthens our ability to create risk transfer solutions that provide financial protection from the devastating effects of earthquakes. We are particularly impressed by GEM’s collaborative, interactive approach in working with its stakeholders, and are proud to support GEM in their goal of worldwide earthquake resilience”. The Board also voted to adjust GEM’s standing rules on partnership and sponsorship, making the process more flexible, easier and accessible to a wider group. The 2-day meeting was highlighted by the progress report on the Global Earthquake Hazard and Risk Model 2018 (GRM2018) and the initial feedback from the expert panel review. Marco Pagani, Hazard Team Coordinator and Vitor Silva, Risk Team Coordinator and concurrent Social Vulnerability lead presented comprehensive reports on the status of the GRM2018. With only a few regions left being worked out, the GRM2018 is poised to make its first release on 5th December 2018.In addition to the status reports, the GRM2018 expert panel review chair, Tom deGroove summarized the panel’s findings saying that, “GEM is on target to launch the first version of its Global Model by the end of this year as planned. We consider this to be an excellent achievement.” The Panel, consisting of seven international experts met on 18-19 April 2018 at the offices of the GEM Foundation in Pavia, Italy with the objective of providing advice to the GEM Governing Board on the effectiveness of GEM’s development of the global earthquake hazard/risk model, and the future direction and character of the model. Below is an excerpt from the final report lauding GEM’s efforts to produce a global model by end of 2018. “The Panel commends GEM’s work to develop the most comprehensive assessment of earthquake hazard and risk on a global scale that has been achieved to date. The hazard and physical risk components of the Model are at a mature level of development. The social vulnerability modelling, whilst evolving rapidly, requires further development before products should be released as part of the global hazard and risk model. The Panel recommends that GEM’s work continues to be driven by the principles of collaboration, credibility, openness and public good, and that GEM continues to address the needs of the private sector as well as the global policy agenda of disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.” The meeting wrapped up with a discussion on GEM’s future program post-2018. Board members supported GEM’s 3-point agenda (OQ development and core products maintenance; application of science; and extending capabilities into new areas and markets), but pointed out the need to add social vulnerability and communication support in its future program.     News GEM 13th anniversary: launch of Atlas 1.0 - a new and easier way of accessing seismic hazard and risk information By: Mar 16, 2022 Share Facebook LinkedIn GEM is proud to commemorate its 13th year anniversary with the launch of Atlas 1.0 - a subscription-based dynamic web portal that allows subscribers to view information in a GIS style map viewer featuring instant display and download of hazard curves, high resolution exposure data and vulnerability curves for any selected point on the map. GEM’s Global Seismic Hazard Map (GSHM) version 2019.1 with associated hazard curves, will be the first dataset that will be made available through this platform. This service gives clients a pay-as-you-go alternative to licensing the GSHM data layers directly. About GSHM 2019.1 In 2018, GEM released its first version of the GSHM. The GEM GSHM was the first of its kind since the GSHAP was presented in 1999. The GEM GSHM was created by collating maps computed using national and regional probabilistic seismic hazard models developed by various institutions and projects, and by GEM Foundation scientists. The OpenQuake Engine, an open-source seismic hazard and risk calculation software developed principally by the GEM Foundation, was used to calculate the hazard values. A smoothing methodology was applied to homogenize hazard values along the model borders. Meeting the existing and future needs of the DRR community As part of GEM’s products and services strategy, GEM is offering value-added products for a fee such as the Atlas 1.0. These value-added products will also be available for free for public-good, non-commercial applications. In turn, the revenue generated from product or services fees will be reinvested to maintain GEM’s core capabilities, with an emphasis on providing support to developing countries.     Repository with the inventory of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in Central Asia Project Name Products Central Asia Exposure Repository with the inventory of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in Central Asia Share Facebook LinkedIn Description The Global Exposure Model is a mosaic of local and regional models with information regarding the residential, commercial, and industrial building stock at the smallest available administrative division of each country and includes details about the number of buildings, number of occupants, vulnerability characteristics, average built-up area, and average replacement cost. The dataset is developed and maintained by the GEM Foundation, using a bottom-up approach at the global scale, using national statistics, socio-economic data, and local datasets. This model allows the identification of the most common types of construction worldwide, regions with large fractions of informal construction, and areas prone to natural disasters with a high concentration of population and building stock.     OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for Europe Project Name Products Europe Hazard OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for Europe Share Facebook LinkedIn Description The Global Hazard Mosaic uses the 2020 European Seismic Hazard Model (ESHM20) to cover the Euro-Mediterranean region. The ESHM20 model uses the same principles as the Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe (SHARE) Project model (Woessner et al., 2015), with state-of-the-art procedures homogeneously applied to the pan-European region. A fully probabilistic framework was adopted in the hazard model implementation, using input datasets that are harmonized across national borders. ESHM20 was developed by the Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Infrastructure Alliance for Europe (SERA) and funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. In addition to the conterminous pan-European region, this model was used to compute hazard for the Kaliningrad Region of Russia, Iceland, and the Canary Islands.     GEM Impact Story Series Childhood love for nature and a fateful journey along the San Andreas Fault Some say my destiny as an earthquake scientist was formed as a result of being driven 50 km along the San Andreas Fault in the early morning before my birth in San Francisco. In any case, as a child, I was in love with nature, which was enhanced by camping and hiking in the hills and mountains of California. My parents inspired me, especially my mom, who became an accomplished artist/painter after raising 4 children and was a huge supporter of everything I ever did. Finding Passion: Geology Course Sparks Career Path I was pretty good at math in school, so some combination of math and science seemed like a logical career path. Out of curiosity, I took a geology course in my second year at university, and that was it; I found my passion! I ended up with a combined degree in math and earth science, and went on to study geophysics in graduate school. Chasing Earthquakes in South America As a graduate student and post-doctoral researcher, I had many opportunities to satisfy my curiosities about the inner workings of the Earth as well as to explore remote areas of the planet. I travelled extensively to South America, particularly Colombia and Peru, where I chased earthquakes with portable seismographs from the Andes to the Amazon jungle, and contributed to our understanding of earthquakes and the behavior of subducting plates beneath the continent. Applying Science to Real-World Problems My interest shifted to the application of science to real-world problems when I began studying earthquakes as a hazard in the context of the nuclear power industry and later in the new field of catastrophe risk modelling in the US in the late 1980s and 1990s. Leading the Development of Risk Research Group in Australia We started with earthquakes and released the first open earthquake risk modelling code (EQRM) in 2004. Over the next decade or so, we worked with local governments in Australia and, in the aftermath of terrorist bombings, and disasters from tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions, bushfires, and floods in Australia and surrounding regions, we expanded our risk modelling capabilities and extended our assistance to help the governments of Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and several other South Pacific islands. A New Chapter in Australia In 2000, my wife Jill, our children, Bennet and Margot, and I left the US bound for Australia. I accepted a job with the Australian government to lead the development of a risk research group, which was created with the ambition to do multi-hazard risk assessments for urban centers in Australia. GEM: Uniting the World in Global Seismic Understanding When I first heard about the GEM concept in about 2006, I immediately recognized it as a great opportunity to bring the work we were doing regionally to a global scale. Geoscience Australia hosted the GEM kick-off meeting in Canberra, Australia in March 2009 and the following year we succeeded in securing the sponsorship of the Australian Government to join GEM as a public Governor, and I happily began to represent Australia on the Governing Board. Leading the Charge: From Governing Board to Secretary General I later served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Governing Board, and in 2015, I had the opportunity to apply for the role of Secretary General. For me, this represented the opportunity to combine my interests in understanding earthquake risks together with the application to public and private sectors, and to do it globally. It brought most of what I had been working on over the previous 40 years together into one job! Mapping Earth's Perils: Unveiling Global Earthquake Risks Now, 7-1/2 years later, what have we done? We released the first global earthquake hazard and risk maps in 2018 and just completed the second major release in June 2023. The new maps have higher resolution and include the measurement of the risk to buildings, but also human mortality and displaced persons. Unwavering Partnership: Nurturing My Career and Mission with Jill I especially look forward to having more time with my wife Jill, who has been with me every step of the way since we met in 1985, and has encouraged me to pursue my career/mission. Jill has been a dear friend to GEM staff, especially those that have lived with us at CAR College in Pavia over the years, including surviving the pandemic together. Embracing the Next Chapter: Time with Family, Friends and Future Plans I look forward to spending more time with our grown children in Australia, Bennett (29) and Margot (26), who have become productive professionals in wind engineering and environmental science, respectively. And then there are my siblings and their families in the U.S, dear friends scattered across the globe, and a few places on the map that we would dearly love to visit! Enhancing Resilience and Global Reach: GEM's Growth and Strategic Initiatives Partly as a result of Covid, GEM expanded its training and capacity development in the use of OpenQuake worldwide through online seminars/workshops, and improved communications outreach and product dissemination. GEM also expanded sponsorships, particularly with the private sector, which contributed substantially to GEM’s overall financial sustainability. GEM matured as an organisation, deepening its collaborations with many project and product partners, including UN agencies, development banks, and the insurance industry. Critical to GEM’s long-term sustainability and mission, GEM developed a Product Development policy and issued a Strategic Plan and Roadmap to 2030, which includes a broadening of its work to contribute to multi-hazard risk assessments and resilience planning over the remainder of the decade. A Privileged Journey: Commitment to GEM's Principles and Continued Service "It is impossible for me to describe how privileged I feel to have been able to be a part of the GEM journey. So much work by so many people and so much support from so many institutions that share the GEM principles of collaboration, openness, credibility, and public good have made all this possible.     Publications Seismic Risk Model for the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Region, China-Considering Epistemic Uncertainty from the Seismic Hazard Models Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2024 | Peer-reviewed This study presents a probabilistic seismic risk model for the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region in China. The model comprises a township-level residential building exposure model, a vulnerability model derived from the Chinese building taxonomy, and a regional probabilistic seismic hazard model. The three components are integrated by a stochastic event-based method of the OpenQuake engine to assess the regional seismic risk in terms of average annual loss and exceedance probability curve at the city, province, and regional levels. The novelty and uniqueness of this study are that a probabilistic seismic risk model for the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region in China is developed by considering the impact of site conditions and epistemic uncertainty from the seismic hazard model.

John outlined several key developments in his presentation: Firstly, he introduced the launch of second-generation earthquake maps, which offered enhanced accuracy and detail. These maps not only estimate losses and building damage but also factor in human impact, providing a comprehensive view of seismic risk. Moreover, GEM is broadening its focus beyond earthquakes to include secondary hazards such as tsunamis and liquefaction. This expansion aims for multi-hazard and systemic risk assessment, ensuring a more holistic approach to disaster preparedness.     News Towards Improved Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment for Bangladesh By: May 21, 2020 Share Facebook LinkedIn A team of scientists from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh led by Dewan Md. Enamul Haque, Assistant Professor at Department of Disaster Science and Management, Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences published a paper Towards Improved Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment for Bangladesh . The authors used GEM’s OQ-engine to develop the PSHA for Bangladesh. The study aims to build on the existing knowledge and improve the overall PSHA results by modifying source, path and site characteristics for Bangladesh. The ground motions - PGA and SA (at 0.2, 1.0 and 2.0 s) were computed using GEM’s OpenQuake and presented in form of hazard maps for 2% and 10% probabilities of exceedance in 50 years as well as mean hazard curves and uniform hazard spectra. The lead author, Asst. Prof. Dewan Haque learned about the OQ software from GEM’s website, and is actively using it for modelling and research work. He found the software easy to use and said he would definitely recommend it to others. “I’m satisfied and happy with my experience with the OQ-engine. Comparing it with other hazard and risk modeling software, I believe that it is better than most software out there. I found the one of the most valuable features of the engine,” says Asst. Prof. Dewan Haque. He further adds that “it is easy to use” but pointed out the OQ-engine would better suit his needs if a “step by step manual on how to upgrade the tools are shared upon the release of new versions”. The OpenQuake Engine is GEM’s state-of-the-art, open-source software collaboratively developed for earthquake hazard and risk modelling. The functionality to analyze hazards and risks at specific site, city, country or regional level makes the OpenQuake Engine a powerful and dynamic tool for assessing the potential impacts of earthquakes at any location in the world.     Ciencia para el Cambio Social GEM Impact Story Series en | esp Primer encu entro con los terremotos Creo que ten ía cu atro años cuando sentí por primera vez un terremoto. Vivíamos en esa época en un edificio, así que lo sentí muy fuerte, fue un movimiento de balanceo. Todavía recuerdo las grietas que generó en nuestra pared. Mi vida antes de GEM, mi mundo en equilibrio Antes de unirme a GEM yo era una profesora muy joven, solo llevaba cinco años enseñando. Había realizado algunas actividades de investigación relacionadas con el comportamiento de las estructuras. En ese momento me preocupaba mucho la parte académica, era mi principal actividad, pero no sabía cómo aplicar mi conocimiento y el resultado de mi investigación para mejorar el bienestar de la sociedad. No estaba satisfecha con hacer solo investigación. Encuentros que cambiaron mi situación En el 2013 fui contactada por GEM para ser parte del proyecto SARA. Acepté la invitación porque vi una oportunidad para aprender sobre la evaluación del riesgo sísmico y para participar en un proyecto que tuviera aplicaciones reales en el cual los resultados podían ser usados por tomadores de decisión para mejorar códigos de diseño y generar estrategias para la mitigación del riesgo. Tratando de mejorar para enfrentar retos futuros Los talleres de entrenamiento en Medellín (Colombia) en el 2014 y en Lima (Perú) en el 2015 también marcaron el inicio de un cambio en mi conocimiento y en mi apreciación del riesgo. Durante el entrenamiento de 2014 aprendimos sobre la taxonomía para edificios de GEM y conceptos generales sobre la evaluación del riesgo sísmico. En el entrenamiento en Perú recibimos una introducción a OpenQuake. Barreras para la resiliencia a sismos Creo que la principal barrera es vivir en una sociedad que no cree que los sismos pueden ocurrir en cualquier momento, sin previo aviso. En Colombia tuvimos un sismo devastador hace 20 años y parece que la mayoría de las personas lo olvidaron. También creo que la resiliencia no es una prioridad para los tomadores de decisión, por lo cual es importante informar sobre el riesgo sísmico de modo que se pueda mejorar la seguridad pública y enfrentar el reto de proteger la infraestructura crítica. El cambio puede empezar por uno mismo Creo que el cambio puede empezar en cualquier momento, pero debe empezar por uno mismo. Cuando se terminó el proyecto SARA en 2015 mi colaboración con GEM no finalizó. Desde el 2016 hemos estado mejorando los modelos de exposición de Medellín, Bogotá y Cali. También colaboramos con GEM en el desarrollo del modelo de exposición de Colombia que se usó para el Mapa Mundial de Riesgo Sísmico de 2018. Orientando los futuros dirigentes en resiliencia sísmica He estado enseñando evaluación del riesgo sísmico en el curso de Ingeniería Sísmica de la Universidad EAFIT desde el año 2017. También he supervisado estudiantes en el uso de OpenQuake para hacer investigación a nivel de pregrado y posgrado en la evaluación del riesgo sísmico de subestaciones eléctricas, el sistema de acueductos de Medellín y deslizamientos producidos por sismos en Ecuador. Todo esto ha sido posible gracias a las experiencias que adquirí en el proyecto SARA. Sin meta fija, pero debemos seguir avanzando A pesar de que alcancé la meta de mejorar mi conocimiento en el tema de evaluación del riesgo sísmico y de transmitir dicho conocimiento a mis estudiantes, la comunidad ingenieril y, de cierta forma, al público en general, me he dado cuenta que esto no es una carrera con una meta fija. Cada vez que me muevo adelante también lo hace la meta, lo importante es continuar avanzando. El poder del compromiso y la colaboración In the academia, I think many would only get involved in projects if there’s funding, but there’s a lot that can be done without the need of funding. The people at GEM are always open to answer your questions, to give you advice… and for me, that has more value than funding. Inspirando a otros Espero que mis experiencias de aprendizaje con GEM puedan inspirar a estudiantes, investigadores, ingenieros y otros, para promover una mayor sensibilización y educación en el tema del riesgo sísmico y contribuir para que Colombia y el mundo sean más resilientes a sismos. Sobre las Historias de Impacto de GEM El riesgo sísmico continúa siendo un tema abstracto y altamente técnico, y existen riesgos importantes debidos a un conocimiento pobre o limitado de dicho riesgo. Los tomadores de decisión y el público en general pueden no tener la capacidad para aprovechar al máximo la información actual y futura que puede ayudar a optimizar o crear mejores estrategias de manejo para la reducción del riesgo, especialmente a nivel local y nacional. De manera específica el proyecto de Historias de Impacto de GEM busca: Recolectar y documentar historias donde GEM o sus colaboradores han contribuido a cambios positivos; Alentar tomadores y formuladores de decisión a usar información basada en ciencia y en evidencias para generar estrategias de reducción del riesgo de desastres a nivel nacional mediante historias positivas de cambio; y Aumentar la sensibilidad del público en general en el tema del riesgo sísmico y la preparación ante dicho riesgo. Entrevista con la Profesora Ana Beatriz Acevedo Ana Beatriz Acevedo es ingeniera civil con maestría y doctorado en ingeniería sísmica. Actualmente es profesora de ingeniería civil en la Universidad EAFIT en Medellín, Colombia, en donde dicta cursos de ingeniería sísmica y evaluación del riesgo sísmico.
