- Northeast Asia Hazard | Global EarthQuake Model Foundation
OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for Northeast Asia Products Northeast Asia Hazard OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for Northeast Asia Share Facebook LinkedIn Description The Northeast Asia (NEA) model was developed internally by the GEM hazard team. The active shallow part of the model is based on the combination of distributed sources and active faults, the latter obtained from the Global Active Fault Database of GEM. As for the case of Northern Africa, we have applied rate redistribution to better represent the spatial variability of seismicity. The deeper portion of the Kamchatka subduction zone was modelled as a combination of complex faults (the subduction interface) and finite ruptures (the slab zone) using the Subduction Toolkit developed by GEM. Border harmonisation of the present model with neighbouring hazard models, particularly with China and EMCA, posed a challenge in developing this model. - Assessing global earthquake risks: the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) initiative | GEM Foundation
Publications Assessing global earthquake risks: the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) initiative Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2014 | Book chapter The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) initiative aims to develop a global model of earthquake risk as an open source, community-driven project. In order to begin this in a structured way, a number of global components that cover the scientific modules of the model have been defined, and requests for proposals have been released, inviting international consortia to bid and lead these projects. The consortia leading these global components define standards and best practice related to the methodologies used in seismic hazard and risk assessment and in particular the collection and storage of data needed therein. This chapter introduces these global components and describes an open source software and risk assessment platform, OpenQuake, that is being developed to provide access to and community interaction with the proposed data and tools.
- Understanding GEM's potential beneficiaries | GEM Foundation
Publications Understanding GEM's potential beneficiaries Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2012 | Report The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation is now at a point in its organizational history when it is ready to begin developing tools and resources for individuals who are not earthquake risk assessment experts. The research project described in this report was designed to learn about the needs of these individuals worldwide, in order to provide information that could help to guide GEM’s future tool and resource development. This project is an important initiative, as user needs are often not assessed prior to the development of scientific or technical tools. That lack of user needs assessment has contributed to a gap between what decision-makers and end users say that they want from science and technology, and what science and technology offer to decision-makers and end users. Fortunately, the gulf between scientific communities and policy-maker and practitioner communities is not so great that it cannot be overcome. Engaging in dialogue and needs assessments—such as the one described in this report—across the divide is one of the best ways to begin to build bridges between these communities.

- Africa Exposure | Global EarthQuake Model Foundation
Repository with the inventory of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in Africa Products Africa Exposure Repository with the inventory of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in Africa Share Facebook LinkedIn Description The Global Exposure Model is a mosaic of local and regional models with information regarding the residential, commercial, and industrial building stock at the smallest available administrative division of each country and includes details about the number of buildings, number of occupants, vulnerability characteristics, average built-up area, and average replacement cost. The dataset is developed and maintained by the GEM Foundation, using a bottom-up approach at the global scale, using national statistics, socio-economic data, and local datasets. This model allows the identification of the most common types of construction worldwide, regions with large fractions of informal construction, and areas prone to natural disasters with a high concentration of population and building stock. The Africa region of the model includes the information pertaining the following countries/territories: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina_Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape_Verde, Central_African_Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial_Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea_Bissau, Ivory_Coast, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao_Tome_and_Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra_Leone, Somalia, South_Africa, South_Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe How to cite this work If you make use of this work, please cite both the publication and the data. - Strain partitioning in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau from kinematic modeling of high-resolution Sentinel-1 InSAR and GNSS | GEM Foundation
Publications Strain partitioning in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau from kinematic modeling of high-resolution Sentinel-1 InSAR and GNSS Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2024 | Peer-reviewed Fault slip rates estimated from geodetic data are being integrated into seismic hazard models. The standard approach requires modeling velocities and relative (micro-)plate motions, which is challenging for fault-based models. We present a new approach to directly invert strain rates to solve for slip rates and distributed strain simultaneously. We generate velocity and strain rate fields over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, utilizing Sentinel-1 Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data spanning 2014–2023. We derive slip rates using block modeling and by inverting strain rates. Our results show a partitioning between localized strain on faults and distributed deformation. The direct inversion of strain rates matches the geodetic data best when incorporating distributed moment sources, accounting for a similar proportion to on-fault sources. The direct strain methodology also aligns best with the independent geological slip rates, especially near fault tips. As high-resolution strain rate fields become increasingly available, we recommend direct inversion as the preferred practice.

OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for the Caribbean & Central America Products Caribbean & Central America Hazard OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for the Caribbean & Central America Share Facebook LinkedIn Description During the USAID-funded FORCE project, the GEM hazard team developed new models for the Central America and the Caribbean region, using the FERMI tool to develop the fault-based source model, with updated subduction sources, and a backbone ground motion model. The v2026.0.0 model includes both a time-independent and a time-dependent (TD) hazard model. The previous model covering the Central America and the Caribbean region (v2018.0.0) was initially developed in the framework of the CCARA project, a GEM collaboration project funded by USAID. Several significant updates were made to the model by the GEM hazard team, leading to the v2019.1.0 release. How to cite this work K. Johnson, R. Styron, C. Brooks, M. Villani, J. Garcia-Pelaez, R.
