Moderated by Belinda Hewitt, ADB's Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, the session featured key experts, including Matt Gerstenberger from GNS New Zealand and Helen Crowley, Secretary General of the GEM Foundation. Gerstenberger kicked off the session, discussing New Zealand's 2022 seismic hazard model update, which revealed a 50% average increase in modelled seismic hazard. His contribution provided valuable insights into the potential implications of hazard updates for countries across Asia and the Pacific. Helen Crowley then took to the stage, sharing GEM's pioneering initiatives in seismic hazard and exposure mapping. She focused on applied research in the USAID-Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance-supported FORCE project , where innovative tools such as machine learning are being employed to forecast global exposure to seismic hazards under varying future scenarios. Crowley emphasised GEM's potential role in guiding resilient planning and investments, stating: "Understanding global exposure to seismic hazards is fundamental for informed decision-making to support risk mitigation. GEM's seismic hazard, exposure and risk maps serve as robust tools on this front, guiding resilient planning and investments. Leveraging machine learning for exposure and vulnerability forecasting, we aim to better understand future seismic risk scenarios that can aid ADB and member countries in making risk-informed investments and prioritising resilient interventions." The webinar's theme emphasised the need to adapt to the evolving nature of seismic risk. The presentations by Gerstenberger and Crowley underlined the urgency of staying ahead in seismic risk assessment. Such insights can guide ADB and its member countries towards better understanding and mitigation of seismic risks, fostering more resilient communities in vulnerable regions. GEM's active participation in the event, highlighted by Helen Crowley's contribution, shed light on innovative methodologies that are proving promising in addressing future seismic risk. The GEM Foundation (Italian registered name “Fondazione GEM”) is a non-profit foundation regulated by Italian law and based in Pavia (hosted by EUCENTRE). 2. How can my company or institution collaborate with GEM? The first and most complete option is to become a GEM sponsor (for more details, please see the following FAQ). If this is not possible for any reason, you can consider starting a specific project and then signing an institutional collaboration agreement. “Institutional” means that the object of the collaboration must fall within the institutional aims of the GEM Foundation, which are described in detail in art. 2 of the statute. Our legal team can provide you with an agreement template for institutional collaborations. 3. How can my company or institution become a sponsor of GEM? As provided in art. 3 of GEM Statute, to become a GEM sponsor you should submit your application to the GEM Governing Board, specifying the sponsorship category, the Sponsorship duration, and the name of the designated member of the Governing Board. Should the Governing Board accept the new sponsorship application, the candidate will have to sign a sponsorship agreement through which they commit to: respect the Statute and the GEM Foundation rules and regulations; disburse the annual contribution in support of the Foundation’s activities set by the Governing Board for the specific participant category to which they belong. Our legal team can provide you with a sponsorship agreement for your specific category. 4. Can GEM support my company or institution just as a consultant or a service provider? Yes, it is possible but is not our preferred approach. Italian law does not prohibit non-profit organizations from doing business as a commercial entity. However, this approach is less in line with our core values and mission. Commercial activities are also more expensive for GEM to carry out due to increased administrative overheads and taxes. For these reasons, GEM undertakes commercial activities only where doing so benefits the community as a whole. GEM reinvests any surplus revenue from commercial projects for use in institutional activities. 5. Which categories of sponsors are available? The GEM Statute includes three macro-categories of sponsors: a. Governor: they are voting sponsors and need to pay a financial contribution … b. Advisor: they are non-voting sponsors and need to pay a financial contribution … c. Associates: they are non-voting sponsors and do not need to pay any financial contribution; they may nominate a delegate to attend Governing Board meetings (without voting right). ​ How to use intellectual property rights and licensing 6. What are the main GEM Foundation intellectual products? As part of its institutional activities, the GEM Foundation produces software, datasets, hazard models, scientific and informative articles, research reports, slides presentation, infographics, maps and pictures. As is well known, these types of materials are protected by intellectual property rights and, except where otherwise specified, the GEM Foundation is the sole rights holder. 7. What is GEM's approach to product rights and licensing? The GEM Foundation adopts an open approach to the management of rights on its products and supports the spread of phenomena such as free software/open source software, open access, open data. With a few limited exceptions, all intellectual products by the GEM Foundation are released with open licenses, such as the Free Software Foundation licenses for software and the Creative Commons licenses for creative contents, datasets and models. Every file that is released on our websites is accompanied by the corresponding license. From time to time, please check the license applied. If in doubt, you can contact licensing@globalquakemodel.org . ​ 8. How to use GEM intellectual products? What types of licenses can be applied? In order to perform analyses using the OpenQuake engine, one needs both the engine software and a model. In order to use a model one must respect both software and data licenses. a. Software, AGPL The software license used by GEM, the GNU AGPL, allows users to use the software for any purpose, including commercial purposes, without having to request a specific permission and without needing to become active supporters of our projects. The AGPL does restrict (re)distribution and integration of the software - in particular it is not permitted to link AGPL software with closed-source software systems, even if this linkage is performed via a network. Users are permitted to modify AGPL software, however, users must remember to release any derived/modified versions openly under the terms of the AGPL. In essence this means that GEM software must remain open and cannot be made into closed products without permission. b. Data and Models The Creative Commons licenses applied to our creative contents, datasets and models, allow users to freely use and modify (by making derivative works) our products and require that the authorship of GEM Foundation is always correctly attributed and in some cases impose some additional restrictions on use. GEM models and datasets are distributed with either the CC BY-SA license which allows commercial use or the CC BY-NC-SA license which prohibits commercial use. Both are Share-Alike licenses; this means that the product and any modified or derived products may only be (re)distributed under the terms of the same license. In essence this means that GEM models must remain open and cannot be made into closed products without permission. ​ c. Other content (slides, images, articles) Some content is distributed under the terms of the CC BY-NC-ND license which prohibits both commercial use and the creation of derived products; this means that you are free to redistribute the content but you may not modify or make commercial use of the content. Content published in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings or other publications may have a different license, please check before using. GEM Foundation registered trademarks The GEM Foundation has two registered trademarks: GEM Global Earthquake Model (see graphics) and OQ OpenQuake (see graphics). They have been registered in the following countries: European Union, United States, Switzerland, Australia, Turkey, Japan. More details about the usage of our trademarks are available below. ​ 9. What are the rules and policies applicable to Marks owned by GEM Foundation? In addition to the generally applicable rules, there are a few specific rules that we ask everyone to follow when using trademarks owned by GEM Foundation. ​ Use the full form of any trademarks (e.g., “GEM Global Earthquake Model”) in the first reference in all documents of mass communication, including marketing collateral and web pages. You may then use any abbreviated or short form references (e.g. “GEM”) within the same the document where the full form has already been used. Do not use GEM Foundation trademarks in a manner that would disparage GEM Foundation or its projects (e.g., untruthful advertising, false/misleading promotional materials, etc.). Do not use a GEM Foundation logo on the cover of a book or magazine without written permission from GEM Foundation. Do not use GEM Foundation trademarks more prominently than your own company, product or service name. Do not use a logo of GEM Foundation on posters, brochures, signs, websites, or other marketing materials to promote your events, products or services without written permission from GEM Foundation. Do not attempt to claim or assert any ownership rights in any mark of GEM Foundation and do not attempt to register any GEM Foundation trademark as a trademark, trade name, domain name, or “doing business as” name, alone or (unless specifically licensed) in combination with your own trademarks. DOs and DON'Ts on the use of GEM logos and links GEM Foundation marks have been created and their use is expressly permitted for a specific purpose. ​ DON'T : Do not use logos or names of GEM Foundation in any commercial or marketing context other than as expressly permitted in this policy unless you have obtained explicit written permission from GEM Foundation to do so. ​ DO : Do use our trademarks for private and personal use to make t-shirts, stickers, and caps for yourself and your friends (meaning people from whom you don’t receive anything of value in return) in a manner that is consistent with the preservation of the goodwill and value of the mark. GEM’s strategy for development of products and services is to facilitate the merging of the interests of public and private sectors to work together to fully assess risk and incorporate risk-based decisions into planning and sustainable development; to spearhead the development of common tools and solutions; and to provide a range of products and services for the combined disaster risk management and reduction community. As part of GEM’s long-term sustainability plan, GEM intends to generate funds from a combination of the following: Sponsorships – to support GEM’s global role as an independent and trusted authority on earthquake hazard and risk issues acting in the public interest; Institutional projects – to support applications of core capability such as the development of hazard models for public benefit; and For-a-fee applications – to bring value-added products to down-stream users such as for insurance or catastrophe bonds, or for the design of buildings and infrastructure. We’ve made significant changes that we hope will make finding GEM products, models and tools easier and faster. The new Products webpage is part of GEM’s efforts to continue to make information freely and openly available, and to broaden its range of products and services for the benefit of the disaster risk management and reduction community. With a new Products page, GEM hopes to further strengthen its efforts to increase their availability and accessibility. The page features a full GEM product list categorized into four product types: models, software, global maps (analog and digital) and datasets. The list is searchable by title or keywords and can be downloaded as an Excel file. If you do not find what you’re looking for, we’ve added a Request button so you can contact us for a specific request. The new Products page is still a work-in-progress and we plan to add more cool stuff in the near future to further enhance your experience on data and information accessibility. At the end of September and December we will be releasing a number of additional earthquake hazard and risk models from the Global mosaic of models developed by GEM, which make up the global maps released in 2018. For earthquake hazard, by the end of the year GEM and its partners will have openly released hazard models for 75% of the land area worldwide, and will have made available for public-good, non-commercial use, hazard models for all countries except China. For risk, by the end of the year, GEM will have released vulnerability models for all residential, commercial and industrial building types (more than 600) and all exposure data to Administrative Level 1 (Provincial) that was used to develop the global risk model (2018). Country profiles with AAL (average annual loss) and PML (probable maximum loss) curves for the three building classes (residential, industrial, and commercial) will have been released for all 192 countries modelled. Finally, social vulnerability indicators will also be released under an open license at country level or Admin 1 (provincial). We are counting on your feedback to further improve the page.     News 1st Croatian Conference on Earthquake Engineering: Earthquakes in the Global COVID19 Pandemic By: ​ ​ Mar 26, 2021 ​ Share Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn ​ Hundreds of online participants joined the first Croatian Conference on Earthquake Engineering held from March 22-24, 2021. Organized by the University of Zagreb Faculty of Civil Engineering, the objective of the conference was to commemorate the Zagreb earthquake events in 2020 and to forge a path to a resilient future. The event gathered national and international researchers, practitioners and public policy makers from Croatia and Europe. GEM’s Vitor Silva gave a presentation on the Potential Impact of Earthquakes in the Global COVID19 Pandemic as keynote for the special session on Urban Renovation Wave Triggered by Earthquake, organized by the City of Zagreb Bureau for Physical Planning. The presentation focused on the results of a study that Vitor and GEM colleague, Nicole Paul, conducted last year. The research culminated in the development of a pilot COVID-19 and Global Seismic Risk Map. The map presents COVID-19 statistics released by Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center over the GEM Global Risk Layer depicting earthquake risk from the GEM Global Earthquake Model (2018). The COVID-19 data shows a cumulative number of new cases reported. The combined map indicates areas where a damaging earthquake could cause increases in COVID-19 cases due to displacement of people from damaged buildings or where health care systems may be further stressed due to human injuries. Background The March 22, 2020 magnitude ML5.5 Zagreb earthquake painfully brought to light insufficient earthquake preparedness and hazard resilience of Croatia’s capital. One of the main goals of the virtual conference is to explore the implications of the Zagreb earthquake on Croatia’s future development as well as on other regions of low to moderate seismicity including earthquake resilience of Europe as a whole. PartnerRe joined GEM earlier this year. Paul Della Marta, official representative of PartnerRe, said, “This new partnership with GEM further strengthens our ability to create risk transfer solutions that provide financial protection from the devastating effects of earthquakes. We are particularly impressed by GEM’s collaborative, interactive approach in working with its stakeholders, and are proud to support GEM in their goal of worldwide earthquake resilience”. The Board also voted to adjust GEM’s standing rules on partnership and sponsorship, making the process more flexible, easier and accessible to a wider group. The 2-day meeting was highlighted by the progress report on the Global Earthquake Hazard and Risk Model 2018 (GRM2018) and the initial feedback from the expert panel review. Marco Pagani, Hazard Team Coordinator and Vitor Silva, Risk Team Coordinator and concurrent Social Vulnerability lead presented comprehensive reports on the status of the GRM2018. With only a few regions left being worked out, the GRM2018 is poised to make its first release on 5th December 2018.In addition to the status reports, the GRM2018 expert panel review chair, Tom deGroove summarized the panel’s findings saying that, “GEM is on target to launch the first version of its Global Model by the end of this year as planned. We consider this to be an excellent achievement.” The Panel, consisting of seven international experts met on 18-19 April 2018 at the offices of the GEM Foundation in Pavia, Italy with the objective of providing advice to the GEM Governing Board on the effectiveness of GEM’s development of the global earthquake hazard/risk model, and the future direction and character of the model. Below is an excerpt from the final report lauding GEM’s efforts to produce a global model by end of 2018. “The Panel commends GEM’s work to develop the most comprehensive assessment of earthquake hazard and risk on a global scale that has been achieved to date. The hazard and physical risk components of the Model are at a mature level of development. The social vulnerability modelling, whilst evolving rapidly, requires further development before products should be released as part of the global hazard and risk model. The Panel recommends that GEM’s work continues to be driven by the principles of collaboration, credibility, openness and public good, and that GEM continues to address the needs of the private sector as well as the global policy agenda of disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.” The meeting wrapped up with a discussion on GEM’s future program post-2018. Board members supported GEM’s 3-point agenda (OQ development and core products maintenance; application of science; and extending capabilities into new areas and markets), but pointed out the need to add social vulnerability and communication support in its future program.   • OpenQuake in the Shaky Isles - GEM Foundation

    News OpenQuake in the Shaky Isles By: ​ ​ Jul 2, 2018 ​ Share Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn ​ New Zealand, often referred to colloquially as the “shaky isles” due to its position on the boundary between the Pacific and Australian plates, has been involved in a long-term partnership with GEM through GNS Science representatives on the Governing and Science Boards, leading the development of the GEM Faulted Earth Database and collaborating on regional initiatives. It will now be the first country to run an end-to-end calculation using the OpenQuake-Engine. The researcher’s team led by Nick Horspool and Andrew King converted the existing national hazard model (dated back 2012) in a format compatible with the Engine, while adding new specific NZ Ground Motion Prediction Equations and Fault Scaling Laws to the OpenQuake repository. Initial results of the hazard comparison are promising (Figure 1) and if all goes well the team will soon be keen to share the model on the OpenQuake platform.In addition to at the hazard level, GNS Science has also converted all of its vulnerability and exposure models from the RiskScape project into OpenQuake formats, in order to enable risk calculations using the Engine. This will provide a continuous and uniform pathway from seismic hazard to risk modeling for New Zealand (Figure 2). As part of the risk work, GNS has also shared the consequence data on physical damage and losses to the building stock of Christchurch in the GEM Consequences Database, for use by the whole community.     Project Name Products South Africa Hazard OpenQuake engine input model to perform hazard calculations for South Africa Share Facebook X (Twitter) LinkedIn Description The initial version of the model was developed by scientists from the Council for Geoscience, South Africa and the Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu, India. The model is described by Midzi et al. (2019). The seismic source model was developed using a newly updated catalogue and consists of zones of distributed seismicity, while the ground motion logic tree consists of two existing ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) derived for the active shallow crust. The model was originally created for the OpenQuake engine. The latest openly available version is v2018.0.2. Since the original version, several updates were made to the model by the GEM hazard team, leading to the latest release (v2018.1.0), which was used in the computation of the 2023 Global Earthquake Hazard and Risk Maps.
