News GEM presents the global earthquake hazard and risk model to key public officials in Malaysia By: May 24, 2019 Share Facebook LinkedIn Global Earthquake Hazard and Risk Model seminar participants. Photo credit: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Marco Pagani, GEM Hazard Coordinator presented the global earthquake hazard and risk model to key public officials in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. About 20 officials participated in the seminar held at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on May 23rd 2019. The seminar and meeting was convened by Professor Azlan Adnan, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Key participants included Dr. Zamri Bin Ramli, Deputy Director, Department of Minerals and Geoscience, Malaysia; Engr. Mohd Nor Azudin, Department of Public Works, Malaysia; Prof. Felix Tongkul, University of Malaysia, Sabah; Dr. Mohamad Bin Abd Manap, Department of Meteorology, Malaysia; and Engr. Hanafi Yusop, TNB Research Center (National Electric Power Company). Other senior representatives from universities and government departments also joined the seminar. A meeting followed the seminar where John Schneider, GEM Secretary General and Marco Pagani discussed potential collaboration between Malaysian experts and GEM, and leveraging GEM's international partnerships. Among the topics discussed were training of engineers and scientists in the use and application of OpenQuake; a project to revise the Malaysian national hazard model using OpenQuake tools; a project to test, revise, and improve GEM's current assessment of seismic risk at the national level; and consultancies to assess site-specific hazard or risk to the electric power and other critical infrastructure. They also discussed potential long-term collaboration via sponsorship. However, the main immediate need expressed by the key officials was to organize an OpenQuake training in Kuala Lumpur in the early fall this year. Prof. Adnan led a delegation last year in Pavia, Italy to visit and learn more about GEM’s earthquake studies, which paved the way to move forward with collaborative and joint activities this year. News GEM Foundation and El Salvador's MARN Conclude Successful OpenQuake Engine and Tools Training By: Dec 14, 2023 Nov 9, 2023 Share Facebook LinkedIn On November 9th, 2023, the GEM Foundation, in collaboration with El Salvador's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), conducted a comprehensive seismic hazard workshop at FEPADE in El Salvador. Part of the USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance-supported Forecasting and Communicating Earthquake Hazard and Risk (FORCE) Project, the 1-day training workshop focused on Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA), Risk Analysis, and utilising the OpenQuake (OQ) Engine. The training workshop introduced classical PSHA and important concepts used to develop PSHA input models. Participants got an overview of PSHA modelling techniques, with sessions on seismic source and ground motion characterisation, and demonstrating their implementation in the OQ Engine. Hands-on sessions involved practical exercises, including a demonstration using the QGIS plugin for PSHA calculations related to the CCARA model and visualising the results. The session also included basic concepts on scenario impact assessment and preview of scenario response risk profiles for El Salvador. Moreover, throughout the week of November 6-11, technical workshops with GEM and MARN engineers and scientists covered multiple facets of hazard and risk assessment. Hazard sessions included practical demonstrations utilising the Modelling Building Toolkit (MBTK) to update El Salvador's national seismic hazard model. These comprehensive workshops showcased the application of new or updated modules of the MBTK within the context of enhancing seismic hazard assessment strategies. Risk sessions focused on additional training for the MARN team, covering scenario impact and event-based methodologies for risk assessment. A couple of technical sessions were dedicated to the review of the national exposure model, the use of local vulnerability functions and techniques for validation of the country’s risk model inputs. This initiative contributes to building local expertise in seismic hazard and risk assessment, enhancing El Salvador's earthquake resilience. The workshop's success owes much to the dedicated local partners' invaluable contributions. The event marks a crucial step forward in strengthening El Salvador's preparedness and response capabilities in seismic risk management. News Africa Earthquake Model: A major step in understanding earthquake risk in Africa By: May 23, 2019 Share Facebook LinkedIn Aerial shot of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania urban center The GEM Foundation released the Africa Earthquake Hazard and Risk model on 15th May 2019 in recognition of UNDRR's* Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2019 in Geneva. The technical data and information for this model can now be downloaded from the Africa Model webpage . The Africa Earthquake model underpins the African portion of GEM’s global maps released in December 2018. “The Africa Earthquake Model is an important scientific contribution to ongoing efforts to reduce earthquake risk in Africa and globally.”- Djillali Benouar, Chair of Africa Science & Technology Advisory Group on DRR for the African Union. The Africa Earthquake Model paints a complete picture of earthquake risk to the continent in terms of potential damage to buildings and direct economic loss. The results can be used by risk managers, urban planners, emergency responders and humanitarian agencies for input to a wide range of disaster risk reduction activities including monitoring of the Sendai Framework indicators. “Presently the model directly supports Sendai Framework Target C by providing estimates of direct economic losses at the national and subnational levels. Through further collaborative efforts, we plan to continue to improve the model to address Targets A, B and D by providing estimates of deaths, missing and affected persons, and impact to critical infrastructure,” said John Schneider, GEM Secretary General. Contact Us | Global Earthquake Model Foundation CONTACT US The GEM Foundation (Global Earthquake Model) is located in the university town of Pavia, Italy, and is part of the Pavia Risk Centre - a knowledge-hub of organisations, people and institutions working on ‘understanding and managing risk’. The GEM Secretariat is hosted by the EUCENTRE - one of GEM's sponsors and core institutions of the Pavia Risk Centre. Map Directions Message us Share Facebook LinkedIn Medieval Tower, Pavia, Italy Anchor 1 From the airport There are three international airports close to Pavia: Milan Linate - 50km, Milan Malpensa - 90km and Orio al Serio (Bergamo) -100km. Linate Airport There is no direct connection between Linate airport and the GEM Secretariat or Pavia Centre. A taxi from Linate to Pavia will cost around €100. The Linate Airport and the center of Milan are also connected with the stops of the M4 metro line: Tricolore and San Babila, in service from Monday to Thursday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM; and from Friday to Sunday from 6:00 AM to 12:30 AM, then it is possible to go by metro to the Central Station. Once you arrive at Milano Centrale you can then take the train to Pavia (see below). Further information can be found on the Malpensa/Linate website. Malpensa Airport There is no direct connection between Malpensa and the GEM Secretariat or Pavia Centre. You will have to go through the city of Milan. If you land at either Malpensa 1 or Malpensa 2 (Easyjet), there are various options from there: From Malpensa Terminal 1, you can take the Malpensa Express train going to Milan Cadorna or Central Station. A single ticket costs €11 and the train takes about an hour to arrive. From there you can take the green metro line to Milan Central Station. ** From Milan Central Station there are trains going to Pavia (timetables can be found on the Trenitalia website). From the Central Station of Pavia take the bus to the GEM Secretariat - see below. Taking the bus to Milan Central Station (right outside both Malpensa Terminal 1 and 2). There are buses almost every 15 minutes during the day, operated by Malpensa Shuttle or Autostradale; the cost of a single ticket is €10. It takes about 45 minutes from Terminal 1, 35 minutes from Terminal 2. From there, follow the route as described above ** A taxi from Malpensa to Pavia centre / the GEM Secretariat will cost around €165. Further information can be found on the Malpensa/Linate website. Orio al Serio Airport (Bergamo) There is no direct connection between the airport of Orio al Serio and Pavia. A taxi from Orio al Serio to Pavia will cost around €175. The fastest way to reach the GEM Secretariat is to take a bus to Milan Central Station (regular services are operated by both Orio Shuttle and Autostradale, a ticket costs around €10) and from there take a train to Pavia. Further information can be found on the Orio al Serio website. ----- Using public transport Train There is a regular train service between Milan and Pavia: Intercity trains are fastest (23 minutes) and usually only stop at Milan Central and Pavia Central station. You need a specific ticket, which costs €10 for a single trip. See for more information. There are many regional trains. Some stop at many small stations, others only at Milan Rogoredo and Milan Lambrate stations. A single ticket costs €4,40. There is a commuter train between Milan and Pavia (S13, operated by Trenord). The train departs from Bovisa and stops at all major metro stations. Bus There are two bus lines connecting Pavia's Central Station to the GEM Secretariat: bus 3 and bus 6. Tickets (€ 1,50 for a single journey) can be bought at a kiosk inside the station. From the station, you can take Bus 3 – Colombarone or Bus 3 – C. Pelizza. Get off at the Tibaldi bus stop. Or take Bus 6 – C. Pelizza from the Manzoni Guidi bus stop, near the Libertà statue, circle. Get off at Abbiategrasso – Instituto Volta bus stop.
