- Board Approves New and Renewed GEM Sponsorships - GEM Foundation
News Board Approves New and Renewed GEM Sponsorships By: Jul 7, 2025 Jun 27, 2025 Share Facebook LinkedIn During its 27 June meeting, the GEM Governing Board approved a substantial slate of new and renewed sponsorships across both public and private sectors, alongside updates to sponsor representation. The continued and growing support underscores GEM’s role as a global platform for collaborative, science-based risk reduction. Under the Public Governor Scheme, Taiwan Earthquake Model signed a new three-year sponsorship agreement, represented by Chung-Han Chan. GNS Science, soon to be part of the newly formed New Zealand Institute for Earth Science (alongside NIWA and MetService), also renewed its three-year commitment, with Matthew Gerstenberger as representative. GEM additionally welcomed Morocco’s Fonds de Solidarité contre les Événements Catastrophiques (FSEC), GEM's first public sponsor from Africa. From Europe, Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) extended its support for four years, with Martin Kern continuing as representative. In the Private Governor category, Allianz renewed its sponsorship for a further three years, with Matthias Hackl as representative. Two new private sector sponsors also joined: Renaissance Re, with a two-year agreement represented by Andrew Dhesi, and Atlantic Re, which signed a three-year agreement. Abderrahim Oulidi will represent Atlantic Re, which has also expressed interest in supporting GEM’s work in Morocco alongside FSEC (see Top Story ). Additionally, a change in representation was noted under the Advisor Sponsor Scheme, with Alexandra Tsioulou appointed as the new non-voting representative for Gallagher Re. These new and renewed partnerships reflect a shared commitment to advancing earthquake hazard and risk understanding. With the support of its public and private sponsors, GEM is better positioned to collaborate on national and regional efforts, share open data and tools, and strengthen global resilience through inclusive science. A repository with global homogenised characteristics of active faults Project Name Products Active Faults Database A repository with global homogenised characteristics of active faults Share Facebook LinkedIn Description The GEM Foundation's Global Active Faults is building a comprehensive, global dataset of active fault traces of seismogenic concern. This repository comprises GIS files of fault traces and small amount of relevant attributes or metadata (fault geometry, kinematics, slip rate, etc.) useful for seismic hazard modeling and other tectonic applications. The dataset is being assembled primarily as a part of GEM's global Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Modeling efforts, although we hope that the data find wide use in research, education and general interest among many users. The dataset currently covers most of the deforming continental regions on Earth with the exceptions of the Malay Archipelago, Madagascar, Canada, and a few other regions. Map credit: Anirudh Rao The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) signed an agreement that will pave the way for both parties to work collaboratively to enhance global earthquake loss modeling efforts and to incorporate these new developments into the USGS PAGER System – a system that provides fatality and economic loss impact estimates following significant earthquakes worldwide. The USGS will be designated as an Associate Partner of GEM to allow USGS scientists to directly participate in the GEM Governing Board meetings. The agreement also stipulates for both parties to undertake new scientific collaboration, hazard and loss model calibration, and to promote new developments, and to seek new national or international joint collaboration activities/projects to be funded internally or through external partners, e.g., USAID/OFDA, World Bank, UNDRR. “We have been a strong supporter of GEM since GEM’s early days, and I have worked very closely with the Risk Team on various projects. Publications Development of a Fragility Model for the Residential Building Stock in South America Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2016 | Peer-reviewed South America—in particular, the Andean countries—are exposed to high levels of seismic hazard, which, when combined with the elevated concentration of population and properties, has led to an alarming potential for human and economic losses. Although several fragility models have been developed in recent decades for South America, and occasionally used in probabilistic risk analysis, these models have been developed using distinct methodologies and assumptions, which renders any direct comparison of the results across countries questionable, and thus application at a regional level unreliable. This publication aims at obtaining a uniform fragility model for the most representative building classes in the Andean region, for large-scale risk analysis. To this end, sets of single-degree-of-freedom oscillators were created and subjected to a series of ground motion records using nonlinear time history analyses, and the resulting damage distributions were used to derive sets of fragility functions.

These engagements highlight GEM's ongoing efforts to advance seismic risk reduction, strengthen collaboration with key global partners, and contribute to the development of innovative risk assessment tools. In this section, we bring you the latest updates from GEM’s involvement in these various events. GEM partners presenting the TREQ results in the IDRiM (Integrated Disaster Risk Management Society) conference for DRR At the recent IDRiM conference in August in Cartagena, Colombia, Nathalie García Millán of the Secretariat of Emergency and Disaster Risk Management in Cali, presented seismic risk analysis results for the city, and Professor Ana Beatriz Acevedo presented a 30-minute special session showcasing the materials for communicating earthquake risk, both developed from GEM's TREQ project. This initiative, in collaboration with Universidad EAFIT and supported by USAID-BHA, focused on training local experts to assess earthquake risks. The presentation highlighted the importance of local involvement in disaster risk management, showcasing how partnerships can enhance community resilience against future seismic events. The sessions were organised as part of the communication component of the FORCE project: "Am I at Earthquake Risk?" This 30-minute special session showcased the materials developed during the TREQ project for communicating earthquake risk to stakeholders and the general public. Professor Ana Beatriz Acevedo led this session with the support of all the members of the working group (GEM, SIATA-AMVA). "Seismic Risk Assessment for Santiago de Cali, Colombia" This presentation highlighted the work carried out in Santiago de Cali during the TREQ project, focusing on its impact and applications in city planning and policy-making. By applying seismic hazard curves to production facilities, the study forecasts annual disruption based on earthquake-induced ground shaking. The analysis also factors in the vulnerability of each facility, providing insights into the potential economic impact of seismic events on critical mineral supplies. This approach highlights the importance of understanding seismic risks to global supply chains. Using GEM’s OpenQuake Engine, the project assesses seismic risks and informs mitigation strategies for critical infrastructure. RAMSEY focuses on strengthening local preparedness and infrastructure resilience, helping communities and emergency services better prepare for future earthquakes. Team members Al Mouayed Bellah Nafeh, Jarod Domenge, and Kirsty Bayliss gave presentations on key topics associated with seismic hazard modeling and the International Macroseismic Scale (IMS-2024). Al Mouayed Bellah Nafeh also co-chaired the session on the international macroseismic scale. Additionally, Kirsty Bayliss led a poster session on the OpenQuake Model Building Toolkit, showcasing tools for developing seismic hazard model components. Their participation emphasised GEM’s progress in earthquake science and risk management, underscoring their dedication to knowledge exchange and capacity building. GEM at PHIVOLCS On August 2, while stationed in the Philippines, Jephraim Oro, GEM Communications Coordinator, visited the PHIVOLCS office in Quezon City, meeting with Engr. Henremagne C. Peñarubia - PHIVOLCS lead for the Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis model project for the Philippines, geologist Azdine Ysulan, and science research specialist Myleen Enriquez. The visit included a tour of PHIVOLCS' exhibition area and a review of available public awareness materials. Discussions covered exposure modelling projects in the country and the sharing of digital copies of the Special Acceleration Maps of the Philippines. This visit aimed to strengthen the collaborative relationship between GEM and PHIVOLCS in advancing seismic hazard and risk research as well as public awareness and education. No images found.
