Back to Bangladesh Outcomes Bangladesh Earthquake Scenarios The project also constructed the rupture geometries for these events, selected a range of ground motion models, and assessed the potential impact—both in terms of damage and losses—that each event could inflict on the country if it were to occur today. The full scenario set consists of twelve events: seven historical events from 1664-1918, chosen out of many in this period, supplemented by five hypothetical events. Repository with the inventory of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in Southeast Asia Project Name Products Southeast Asia Exposure Repository with the inventory of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in Southeast Asia Share Facebook LinkedIn Description The Global Exposure Model is a mosaic of local and regional models with information regarding the residential, commercial, and industrial building stock at the smallest available administrative division of each country and includes details about the number of buildings, number of occupants, vulnerability characteristics, average built-up area, and average replacement cost. The dataset is developed and maintained by the GEM Foundation, using a bottom-up approach at the global scale, using national statistics, socio-economic data, and local datasets. This model allows the identification of the most common types of construction worldwide, regions with large fractions of informal construction, and areas prone to natural disasters with a high concentration of population and building stock. The Southeast Asia region of the model includes information pertaining to the following countries/territories: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. News METIS Workshop Advances Site-Specific Seismic Hazard Assessment By: Dec 14, 2023 Nov 14, 2023 Share Facebook LinkedIn Hosted by GEM from November 14-15, 2023, in Bergamo, Italy, the METIS workshop focused on advancing site-specific seismic hazard assessments. This workshop, attended by more than 80 individuals, aimed to showcase achievements of the METIS project and highlight methodological advancements relevant to site-specific studies. METIS, an EU Horizon 2020 project, focuses on refining tools and methodologies for seismic safety assessments of nuclear reactors, translating research into practical applications for industry use. During the event, GEM speakers Anna Rood and Marco Pagani presented insightful topics: PBR Validation by Anna Rood: Addressing precariously balanced rocks (PBRS), Anna’s presentation emphasised the ground-motion constraints provided by PBRS over extended timescales. She highlighted the need for a multidisciplinary team to validate each realisation of the PSHA model, incorporating uncertainties in fragility and age, ultimately improving the PSHA model logic tree. Watch Anna's presentation below. New OQ Features within METIS by Marco Pagani: Marco showcased recent enhancements to the OQ Engine, discussing methodological improvements. He described novel approaches such as epistemic uncertainty propagation, vector-valued PSHA, and earthquake sequence modeling for aftershocks, aiming to efficiently handle uncertainties. News Social Vulnerability Workshop: Making recovery and resilience modeling useful for decision makers and local stakeholders By: Jul 31, 2019 Share Facebook LinkedIn Social Vulnerability workshop participants - June 18-19, 2019 More than 20 individuals from NGOs, academia, private and public sectors from US, Canada, Australia, Nepal, China, Germany and Switzerland participated in GEM’s Social Vulnerability workshop held from 18th to 19th of June 2019 in Pavia, Italy. The aim of the 2-day workshop was to review the methodology and tools for social vulnerability modeling, and to outline future interdisciplinary directions and opportunities for integrating hazard, built-environment, and social dimensions of earthquake risk into a single measurement framework that takes into account quantitative, ‘top-down and stakeholder-based, bottom-up’ approaches. The workshop also set in motion GEM’s plan to release a Global Social Vulnerability and Integrated Risk (SVIR) map in December this year. Dr. Christopher Burton of Auburn University, USA and GEM’s former SVIR Team Coordinator, facilitated the 2-day workshop and is working with GEM to complete the global SVIR map. Areas of model improvement: perspectives of participants Participants identified four key areas that need to be addressed to improve the current SVIR metrics, models and tools to ensure its usefulness at the local level. These are: integration of risk and hazard with social vulnerability modeling; addition of statistical and technical capabilities to GEM’s Integrated Risk Modeling Toolkit (IRMT) and training of its users; using Resilience Performance Scorecard (RPS) as a metric by interlinking it with real data such as no. of hospital beds; and updating of Recovery Modeling Tools to include other hazards such as fire and floods. “Social vulnerability modeling is most useful for the public sector. Nonetheless, any model with a business interruption component would be good for the insurance sector,” Alex Allman, Munich Re underscoring the value of social vulnerability models in the private and public sectors. GEM social vulnerability and resilience: future directions To address the gaps between risk dimensions and stakeholder needs, the group agreed that there is an urgent need to improve communication of existing tools, methods and models with GEM partners and organizations working on similar initiatives in order to encourage stakeholders to use and contribute to its future development. Developing basic standards for data and methods for resilience and social vulnerability modeling by integrating current and future work into all aspects of the disaster risk reduction (DRR) cycle – prevention, preparation, response and recovery was also considered an important component for future models. By having basic standards, others can conduct assessments at sub-national level. Other aspects that need attention in the near future are: multi-hazard resilience at community, infrastructural and institutional levels; identification of where indirect economic losses are likely to occur and which areas are most vulnerable; and understanding the drivers of business resilience and recovery within different industries. What’s next Several technical papers will be prepared in the coming months as well as an SVIR program plan to outline the way forward for GEM’s work in the field of social vulnerability and integrated risk. Publications GEM1 Best Practices for Using Macroseismic Intensity and Ground Motion Intensity Conversion Equations for Hazard and Loss Models in GEM1 Share Facebook LinkedIn Download 2010 | Report Macroseismic shaking intensity is a fundamental parameter for the development, calibration, and use in a variety of hazard maps as well as in empirical (direct) and semi-empirical (indirect) earthquake shaking loss methodologies. Macroseismic data also quantify damage from past and present events and facilitate communicating ground motion levels in terms of human experiences and incurred losses. The aim of this report is to summarize and recommend “best practices” for the use of macroseismic intensity in conjunction with hazard maps (particularly ShakeMaps) and as input to associated loss models. The continued reliance on macroseismic intensity data dictates that ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) alone are not always sufficient for estimating or constraining shaking hazards. Relations that allow direct estimation of intensity given an earthquake magnitude and distance, and those that convert ground motions to intensity (and vice versa) are required. Forward estimation of macroseismic intensities take two primary forms: 1) direct intensity prediction equations (IPEs), and 2) ground-motion-to-intensity conversion equations (GMICE). In addition, one can potentially better constrain historical ground motions at particular sites by employing intensity-to-ground-motion conversion equations (IGMCEs), though such equations are rare. Both the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) and Global ShakeMap (GSM) require advice and optimization in the state-of-the-art use of ground motion and intensity data. We provide background on the issues relating ground motions to intensities, directly predicting intensities, and offer insight into their uses. In the end, we recommend initial default IPE and GMICE selections for use in the immediate short term while additional research on these fronts continues and develops. A brief summary of highly related, current studies that help inform this report is also provided. Based on these ongoing analyses, and this report’s summary, we provide recommendations for further refinements in the form of continued research and development efforts.

News Hazard Information Profiles Launched By: Dec 13, 2021 Share Facebook LinkedIn This new supplement to the UNDRR-ISC Hazard Definition & Classification Review – Technical Report provides hazard information profiles (HIPs) for 302 hazards of concern for disaster risk reduction efforts. The report and accompanying HIPs are the result of the collaboration of hundreds of scientists globally. GEM hazard scientists Kendra Johnson, Richard Styron and Robin Gee provided the HIPs for earthquakes and associated or triggered hazards, and John Schneider participated in the working group that produced the 2020 report on the “ Hazard Definition & Classification Review: Technical Review . The supplement is the first ever compilation of definitions of over 300 hazards that are relevant to the 2015 United Nations landmark agreements of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals. This compilation of existing information provides a starting point for bringing together information on hazards that will need to be regularly reviewed and updated by the relevant international institutions in partnership with the scientific community in order to build an information ecosystem better suited to the risks of today and tomorrow. News Resilience is in our hand By: Jul 2, 2018 Share Facebook LinkedIn In 2009 you wrote Peace of mind in earthquake country (together with Peter Yanev), which is considered “the bible about earthquake risks”. Why do you think it was so well received by the non-expert public? And based on that experience, how communication should change in order to facilitate a global “understanding of risk” (as suggested in the recent Sendai Framework 2015)? We wrote the book for non-technical people, following the lead from Peter’s 1974 First Edition. We tried to demystify earthquake engineering and make it tangible for everyone. The key is that there are really simple things that can be done to reduce risk, and we wanted to get that message across. In my mind, the key to achieving a ‘global understanding of risk’ is to use consistent simple language across industries, from policy to insurance to engineering – GEM could be a leader in establishing this common terminology. Often developing countries are lagging behind in the process of making their environment safer. To which extent are innovation, sustainability, and open source technology keywords to empower resilience in the most vulnerable regions? Risk for developing countries is usually understood and communicated at the regional level, rather than at the building-specific level. We have to get knowledge about individual risks into the hands of people that can do something about it. Regional planning and policy can only go so far. This is a great opportunity for GEM. Through technology and open source tools we are now better able to capture and communicate site-specific information, empowering the owners of that risk. This will drive resilience which will drive sustainability – what is the carbon footprint of a major earthquake? The positive cycle of encouraging insurance coverage for buildings in order to spread the risk and make premiums more affordable often disregards incentives to take measures for loss prevention. How do you think insurance schemes should address the issue of prevention?This touches on one of the greatest opportunities in earthquake risk reduction. Earthquake insurance is generally priced on the mean, with significant cross-subsidization. The good risks pay for the bad, and there is little incentive for improvement at the building level. (If home prices were based on the neighborhood mean, the incentives to put in that new kitchen would certainly change!). Again, this is a great opportunity for GEM. If we can connect risk at the building scale to portfolio exposure and therefore insurance pricing, we can create financial incentives for resilience. Retrofitting costs are unaffordable in many countries of the world. Which can be the solution for this problem? Can open data in some way ease this process?Open data, at the building-level scale, will empower people to do something. Data on the overall risk at the regional level helps, but we really need to find a way to inform people as to their risk, not the average risk profile for their city. Business continuity is crucial in the post-earthquake phase and securing your buildings and installations is critical. Can you give me a measure of the cost-benefit ratio of retrofitting a working environment? The opportunity here is to balance business continuity costs with insurance and real estate costs. It makes no sense to view these disciplines in isolation, although this is often the case. Business continuity and insurance costs should reflect more resilient construction and this reduction in costs should incentivize better real estate standards. Looking at these disciplines together, I have rarely seen payback periods greater than 3 years for major retrofit or resilient design enhancements. How do you think private sector, and specifically engineering companies like ARUP, can play a role in risk reduction? Engineering companies typically understand risk at the building-scale. Modeling and insurance companies typically understand risk at the portfolio scale. Engineers need to get better at portfolio analysis to have greater impact (and insurers need to get better at building analysis) and Arup is heading in that direction. In 2013 ARUP was the first engineering firm to join GEM. Can you make a round-up of the past 2 years of collaboration?It has been a fantastic opportunity for Arup to be a supporter of GEM, and for me personally to be involved in such an important effort. What I mentioned in 2013 still holds, “by combining our global engineering expertise with seismological and financial aspects of the model, we will help quantify the benefits of risk mitigation, help create financial incentives for earthquake resiliency and thus save lives”. How can the engineering sector benefit from open source software like the OpenQuake-Engine or specific tools destined to structural assessment, retrofitting and reconstruction?GEM can help the engineering sector perform portfolio analysis based on their detailed understanding of earthquake risk at the building scale. This will incentivize risk-differentiated insurance pricing, which will incentive resilience.
