OpenQuake Workshop at Oxford

GEM Presents Seismic Hazard Research at ESC2026

GEM contributed to the 40th European Seismological Commission General Assembly in Istanbul, 6–11 September. Seismic Hazard Scientist Kirsty Bayliss convened and chaired a session on seismic source characterisation and presented a poster on modelling uncertainties. GEM PhD candidate Fahrettin Kuran presented research on methodological choices in stochastic earthquake modelling, receiving special recognition for his oral presentation.

GEM Delivers Seismic Hazard and OpenQuake Workshop at Oxford

GEM delivered a three-day workshop on probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) at the University of Oxford, 28–30 September. The training was facilitated by Richard Styron, Senior Active Faults Specialist, and Manuela Villani and Kendra Johnson, both Senior Seismic Hazard Scientists at GEM. It combined PSHA fundamentals with hands-on OpenQuake exercises, focusing on fault-based seismic source modelling and uncertainty in hazard assessment. The workshop was supported through the NERC funding for the UK's GEM subscription.

Istanbul Municipality Staff Trained in OpenQuake Risk Assessment

Fourteen staff members from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality took part in a one-day training on scenario-based seismic hazard and risk assessment using the OpenQuake Engine. Led by GEM/IUSS Pavia PhD candidate Furkan Narlitepe, the training combined technical instruction with hands-on exercises, from preparing earthquake rupture and site models to estimating damage and losses across buildings and infrastructure.

GEM Delivers Two-Part OpenQuake Training at CERN

GEM delivered a two-part training programme at CERN, Switzerland, covering GEM models, the OpenQuake Engine and the OpenQuake Vulnerability Modeller's Toolkit (oq-vmtk). Marco Baiguera, Exposure Analyst, and Al Mouayed Bellah Nafeh, Physical Vulnerability Lead, led the first session on 7–9 September. Al Mouayed Bellah Nafeh and Anirudh Rao, Seismic Risk Modelling Lead, led the second session on 6–8 October.

GEM Delivers Seismic Risk Assessment Training at Unipol in Bologna

GEM delivered a two-part training programme at Unipol in Bologna, focusing on seismic hazard and risk assessment in Italy. The first part, held in July, led by GEM Seismic Hazard Scientists Christopher Brooks and Francesco Serafini, covered seismic hazard, ground-motion modelling, and hazard model testing. The second part, held from 30 September to 1 October, led by Marco Baiguera, Exposure Analyst, and Al Mouayed Bellah Nafeh, Physical Vulnerability Lead, covered exposure characterisation, including building locations and characteristics, and physical vulnerability assessment using nonlinear dynamic analysis. Both parts are key components of earthquake risk modelling, supporting the assessment of potential damage and losses.

GEM's Catalina Yepes Selected for EERI Housner Leadership Programme

Catalina Yepes, GEM's Exposure Development Lead, has been selected for the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's (EERI) George W. Housner Leadership Certificate Program. The 12-month programme prepares mid-career professionals from various earthquake risk reduction fields for advanced leadership roles. It combines online training, peer discussions and practical projects, focusing on strategic planning, communication, policy engagement and leadership in earthquake risk reduction.

GEM Offers Spanish-Language OpenQuake Training for Latin America and the Caribbean

GEM organised four Spanish-language virtual workshops on seismic hazard and risk assessment using OpenQuake, with sessions in September and November 2026. The programme involves Alejandro Calderón, GEM Exposure Research Lead, and Daniela González González, GEM Exposure Analyst. Supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the workshops cover earthquake scenarios, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and event-based risk assessment.

GEM Supports ROSE Master's Scholarships and Seismic Hazard Training

The 2026/2027 ROSE Advanced Master's in Earthquake Engineering, jointly awarded by the University of Pavia and IUSS Pavia, offers up to eight full tuition waivers. GEM will support one selected candidate from a lower-middle income country (LMIC) with a full tuition waiver and additional assistance towards living expenses. GEM will also contribute to the academic programme, with Marco Pagani, Head of Seismic Hazards, and Manuela Villani, Senior Seismic Hazard Scientist, teaching Seismic Hazard and Engineering Seismology in March 2027.

Morocco's Solidarity Fund against Catastrophic Events (FSEC) Visits GEM Headquarters

In July 2026, analysts from Morocco's Solidarity Fund against Catastrophic Events (FSEC) visited GEM's headquarters in Pavia to strengthen their expertise in exposure modelling and jointly develop a model for seismic risk assessment in Morocco. The visit builds on GEM's partnership with FSEC and Atlantic Re, its first public- and private-sector sponsors from Africa, and the ongoing Morocco Earthquake Model project.
