GEM has been successful in receiving grants to participate in three projects recently announced by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction & Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank, in partnership with the UK Department of International Development (DFID). The purpose of the projects is to develop a framework for a multi-hazard view of risk. The projects will develop the ‘first set of open and internally consistent data on multiple hazards, exposure, and vulnerability’. Three international consortia will collaborate to develop the data framework, with an initial focus on developing detailed data for Tanzania, together with countries such as Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, and Nepal. It is hoped that this framework will form the foundation for future multi-hazard impact and risk assessments. GEM will lead the consortium on the development of the open repository for exposure data and is a partner in the multi-hazard and vulnerability projects, which will be led respectively by the British Geological Survey (a GEM partner) and the University College London (a member of GEM’s global component project on vulnerability). The combined Inception Workshop for these projects will be held at GEM Headquarters in Pavia on 10-11 April.
