The Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation is proud to support a PhD scholarship opportunity at the prestigious IUSS PhD programme in Earthquake Engineering (ROSE). This collaborative program between Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia and Università degli Studi di Pavia offers a unique opportunity for highly motivated students to gain expertise in earthquake engineering.
This scholarship co-funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) focuses on:
“Development of innovative methods for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis”
The grant will focus on the development of innovative methods for the probabilistic calculation of seismic hazard, such as vector calculus and new methods for the propagation of epistemic uncertainty. These methods will allow to obtain estimates of seismic damage to structures, thus contributing to the design of interventions for higher sustainability. Other topics that could be developed concern new approaches for building seismic occurrence models.
The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in geophysics, geology, civil or environmental engineering, with knowledge of probabilistic seismic hazard modelling and good programming skills, preferably in Python.
Benefits of undertaking an IUSS ROSE PhD in collaboration with GEM:
Exclusive international exposure and broad, interdisciplinary training: Gain a well-rounded understanding of earthquake science and engineering through a diverse curriculum and international collaboration.
Unique opportunity to work with a global network: work alongside highly motivated students and GEM employees from around the world, guided by esteemed academics and professionals.
Full scholarship: Focus on your research without financial burden.
English-language instruction: The program is conducted primarily in English, with support for occasional administrative matters in Italian.
By applying your research to develop innovative methods for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, you'll contribute significantly to building a more resilient future for our planet.
