 Development and implementation of methodologies to develop fragility models

The Risk Modeler’s Toolkit (RMTK) is a suite of tools that enables the generation of fragility and vulnerability models for a single building or for a class of structures. It has been developed as a supporting tool for the OpenQuake-engine (, in order to produce the necessary vulnerability inputs required for seismic risk assessment, but it is also a mean to explore, harmonise, and bring together in the same platform some of the most used methodologies to assess structural vulnerability.

Seismic Risk Assessment of Lifelines and Networks

The proposed study is related with the seismic assessment of lifelines and estimation of losses following an event. Focusing on a specific network (such as transportation system, water supply, electrical grid or other), and considering its specificities, a seismic assessment is to be carried out, in order to analyse the probability of disruptions in the network (which may lead, for example, to an interruption in the supply), to identify vulnerable points and to evaluate the seismic response/behavior of the network based on performance measures. For a specific event, evaluate and estimate the losses due to network interruption and repair time.

Probabilistic Seismic risk Assessment of Urban Centres

Earthquake risk assessment of urban areas broadly involves creating a seismic hazard model, collection of detailed population and building inventory data, and calibration of fragility and vulnerability functions that are representative of the different building typologies in the region. This study involves developing a seismic risk model for one of the following selected cities: Lima (Peru), Los Angeles (United States), Sydney (Australia) or Tokyo (Japan). The researcher is expected to create and integrate state-of-the-art exposure, hazard, and vulnerability models. In addition to a fully probabilistic assessment of the earthquake damage and loss for one of these regions, the project also envisages selective scenario-event studies to explore the impact of different earthquakes on potential damage, loss, and fatalities. The final component of the project involves validating the results from the scenario analyses against available consequence data from historical events, such as the 1974 Mw 8.1 and 2007 Mw 8.0 Peru earthquakes.
