Playing a role in DRR

Being at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction from 14 to 18 March 2015 in Sendai (Japan) would mean taking active part in the global debate on earthquake risk. Thousands of organizations and companies from around the world will attend the various sessions in programme, participate to workshops and contribute to the draft of the post-2015 framework.

The GEM Foundation is committed to playing a significant role in disaster risk reduction by developing and communicating earthquake hazard and risk information and making them freely available for the entire community. Specifically, GEM pledges to:

  • developing and applying science and technology to inform DRR;
  • collaboratively developing open-source tools and open-access data, methods and risk information that are transparent, reproducible and credible
  • working collaboratively through a public-private partnership, at global to local scales, to establish guidelines and standards and to develop capacity for understanding and reducing risks; and
  • leveraging common ground across institutions to create a framework for developing, sharing and disseminating risk information

The Symposium

A unique symposium on earthquake risk - “Powering Asian organisations with GEM’s OpenQuake tools - assessing earthquake risk collaboratively" - organized in joint cooperation with OYO, NIED and IRIDeS will be held on March 13 in the auditorium of the new base-isolated IRIDeS Building in Sendai (Japan).

Participants are invited to take part of the luncheon organized by the OYO corporation and to the following afternoon talks. Four presentations will be given, featuring examples of how public and private organisations are applying innovative tools and approaches to assess risk in Asia, and to recover from devastating earthquake events.

Learn more from the side box about the programme. Numbers are limited so please register here if you would like to participate.

The Booth #6-082

A dedicated GEM booth "New frontiers in earthquake risk assessment and managementwill be set up at the Sendai Mediatheque from March 14- 18.

Attendees to the conference will have the chance to directly experience the open and freely available data, tools and resources for calculating and exploring earthquake risk. The OpenQuake platform will be there for testing and best cases from different part of the world will show how GEM resources have been applied so far for disaster risk reduction.
