Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment for the Republic of Armenia

Background

The Republic of Armenia is a landlocked country bordering Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Turkey, with a population estimate of 3.01 million in 2014. The country is located in the region which is prone to large levels of seismic hazard. The current seismic hazard zoning map of Armenia dates back to 1994 and there is a need to update the maps to incorporate modern analysis methods and state-of-the-art research. In order to update the seismic hazard information and create new hazard zoning maps in Armenia, the World Bank is supporting the NSSP in conducting a national Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA). The work is performed by consortium of three firms, including AIR Worldwide Corporation (AIR), Global Earthquake Model Foundation (GEM), and GEORISK Scientific Research CJSC (Georisk). Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment for the Republic of Armenia_A countrywide assessment of seismic hazard is performed within this project. The current seismic hazard-zoning map of Armenia, which is a normative document that has been incorporated into the seismic building code, dates back to 1994 and there is a need to update the maps to incorporate modern analysis methods and state-of-the-art research. Within this project we updated the seismic hazard information and created new hazard zoning maps in Armenian collaboration with the National Survey for Seismic Protection (NSSP). The specific outcomes of this assignment include basic datasets, earthquake occurrence and ground motion models, a complete probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and specific seismic zoning maps, documents and reports. The results of this assessment will be used to enact new seismic hazard zoning maps in Armenia and will inform the Ministry of Urban Development in updating the national seismic building code. The outcomes of the PSHA will also be used by the NSSP to perform further seismic risk assessment and other seismic risk reduction initiatives as required.
