Regional Programme for the Caribbean

From 2009 onwards various activities have been undertaken to inform relevant stakeholders in the Caribbean of GEM:

  • On 30 July 2010 Tony Gibbs of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) delivered an address on GEM to over 70 senior engineers from a variety of countries (mostly IStructE Council Members)
  • On 20 September 2010 Tony Gibbs presented GEM to a small group of members of IStructE in Jamaica
  • On 15 October 2010 the Institution of Structural Engineers (Caribbean Division) hosted a presentation of the GEM project in Trinidad. Presenters included Anthony Farrell and Tony Gibbs of IStructE and Richard Robertson the of the Seismic Research Centre. Over 60 engineers, architects and insurance personnel from Trinidad, Barbados and Guyana attended.
  • On 21/22 March 2011 Tony Gibbs presented GEM at the Caribbean Construction Forum on the Reconstruction of Haiti, taking place in Trinidad. The event was jointly sponsored by the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce (CAIC) and the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Operations Manager and Kick-Off Workshop
Following these meetings and presentations, Dr Myron Chin was appointed as Operations Manager to coordinate the setup of a Regional Programme. A large kick-off workshop was held in May 2011, hosted by the University of the West Indies, with a view to start the Regional Programme in the region. The workshop featured participation of over 70 individuals (experts and stakeholders) and led to the formation of the following working groups. The groups are now working on their planning.
Pictures of the workshop can be viewed below. To download the presentations that were given, visit the dedicated website of the Seismic Research Centre at the UWI, Trinidad & Tobago.
