An IT Review Panel, composed of 17 experts from around the world, and featuring extensive experience and a rich assortment of backgrounds, left no stone unturned when discussing GEM’s IT Architecture, web services, databases, user interface, computational engine, etc. |
The panel was positively impressed with GEM's openness and willingness to expose itself to constructive criticism, and produced an extensive set of recommendations [download a summary of the report below] that GEM should now follow in order to become a true open-source community-based endeavour.
GEM reacted immediately to the Panel’s recommendations, bringing onboard an experienced open-source project manager Joshua McKenty who is now guiding the IT reorganisation process that should lead to a first sandbox release of GEM’s open-source platform by January 2011. Within this framework, GEM’s Global Components and Regional Programmes consortia have been identified as short-term high-priority users whose needs must be met within the next few months, before other GEM users and beneficiaries can be addressed.
