Position: Executive Committee Hazard Coordinator

Marco Pagani serves as the Hazard Coordinator of GEM's Executive Committee.

Marco obtained a Master degree in Geological Sciences in 1997 from the University of Milano. Just after he started collaborating with an engineering seismology research Institute of the Italian National Research Council (IRRS-CNR) on the implementation of several Seismic Microzonation studies of which the most important was the “Umbria-Marche Seismic Microzonation Project”. In the period between 1999 and 2002, Marco served as a PhD fellow at the University of Milan focusing his activities on the development of a PSHA code and on the management of a small aperture local array for environmental monitoring. After obtaining the PhD he spent some months working on probabilistic seismic hazard analysis at CETE Méditerranée in Nice, and immediately after he joined the Istituto per la Dinamica dei Processi Ambientali (IDPA-CNR) where he worked on the preparation of regulations for seismic microzonation studies in the Emilia-Romagna Region. From 2003 till 2008 Marco focused his research activities at IDPA-CNR on the development of clustering and data analysis techniques with applications in Information Retrieval, Earth and Material Sciences. In February 2009 he joined the Swiss Seismological Service at ETH, where he coordinated the hazard component of the GEM1 project.

Marco participated in a number of national and international research projects in the field of Seismology, Engineering and Information Technology. He authored a number of papers in the field of engineering seismology and data analysis and currently serves as a reviewer for several international journals with topics ranging from geographical information science to seismic hazard.
