GEM1 progressing well: mid-term review held

Almost the entire GEM1 team in Pavia the 8-9 September to see how far one has come in half a year and what needs to be done next. At least 20 individuals are spending part or even all of their time on making sure that GEM is off on a good start; they will provide core capabilities for the present and key knowledge for future development of the full GEM computing environment and product set.

All the people working hard on the creation of a basis for the global earthquake model, met in Pavia 8-9 September; already more than 6 months on the way, it was time for the a mid-term review of the GEM1 project.

Being a multidisciplinary project, presentations and discussions about hazard codes, testing, risk models, the GEM software system were on the programme. A cooperation working out well: a scene from daily working sketched by project coordinator Stefan Wiemer: "I often see Marco Pagani running back and forth to Gaya from the IT team asking her to explain how something can be integrated in the database. Nice to see, but also very effective."

Conclusions after 2 days of review and many discussions that stimulated new ideas, the exchange of views and the adjustment of work: the hazard work on hazard is well underway, the risk group came a long way, but has quite some work to do the coming six months (due to difficulties encountered in the first six ones) and the IT team has done a great preperation, and will now work towards real user-cases.

A detailed action plan to prepare for the MAG (Model Advisory Group) meeting in November is ready and a more general one for the activities that need to be carried out before March 2010 as well. Don't forget to follow GEM1 news to be kept up-to-date.
