Risk

GEM’s Risk Module will calculate damage and direct losses resulting from this damage such as fatalities, injuries and cost of repair.

Five Global Components for seismic vulnerability and risk have been identified by GEM's Risk Focus Group:

  • GEM Ontology & Taxonomy
  • Inventory Data Capture Tools
  • Global Exposure Database
  • Global Earthquake Consequences Database
  • Global Vulnerability Estimations Methods

From 16 October until 23 November the draft RfP documents were under public review, to allow the global community to comment. Read more about the review, and download a document with the comments that were raised and the response of the Risk Focus Group to those on a dedicated page.

Call for proposals: 18 January - 18 March [0:00 CET]
GEM aims to achieve its goals by developing state‐of‐the‐art open source software and global databases necessary for reliably mapping earthquake risk. To this end, GEM has posted five Requests for Proposals that may be downloaded below. Target budgets for the RfPs range from 300,000 – 900,000 €.

The deadline for proposals is set on Thursday 18th March 2010 at 0:00 CET.

GEM anticipates that proposals will be prepared and submitted by international consortia. The GEM Secretariat will aim to facilitate contact between institutions for the creation of international consortia. Proposals will be subject to peer review, and will be selected by GEM's Governing Board, with awards expected in July 2010.

Proposals can be sent to secretariat@globalquakemodel.org.
This address may also be used for further questions regarding the Risk RfPs.

Please read the following documents carefully:
Risk RfP Background: this document summarises the mechanisms and requirements of GEM and the rationale behind the 5 RfPs and how they are expected to fit together.
Rules for Global Components proposals: this document explains the rules for preparation, submission and selection of GEM Global Components proposals.
