Position: Visual Communications Officer

James Brown is responsible for developing the Visual Communications and Branding of GEM. Focusing on all channels of communications in particular the web development and primary print media.

After graduating with a degree in Fine Art and Film Production in 2003, James has applied his creative skills to various businesses in external design & marketing agencies and as the Senior Designer and Brand Manager in a large multinational corporation.

For the last three years he was running his own design & branding company, working with businesses and non-profit organisations across England, but has now moved to Italy to focus on GEM.

Position: Risk Engineer

Miriam Colombi currently serves as a risk engineer in GEM’s Risk team and is working on technical development of GEM’s Risk Module. Miriam was part of the Seismic Risk group of the Eucentre from June 2006 until August 2010, where she worked on projects of empirical and analytical vulnerability, GIS development and seismic risk maps. She has been involved in a number of different national and international research projects, mainly in the areas of seismic vulnerability of buildings at varying geographical scales and the evaluation of seismic risk and economic loss. In 2009 she became involved in GEM, participating in the GEM1 project.

Position: Vulnerability and Resilience Scientist

Christopher Burton is a geographer interested in the application of geospatial analysis and modeling techniques to human-environmental interactions. In 2007, Christopher received his M.S. in Geography from the University of South Carolina, and he will receive his PhD in Geography in the spring of 2012. Christopher's graduate training was centered within the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute (HVRI) at the University of South Carolina. His research focuses on hazard vulnerability and disaster resilience in order to gain insight into adverse impacts from natural hazard events to provide guidance for sustainable policy actions that can enhance disaster loss reduction. Christopher has authored and co-authored a multitude of peer reviewed journal articles on such topics.
