GEM Outreach Meeting 2009The GEM Outreach Meeting, held 8-10 June in Schloss Hohenkammer and hosted by GEM’s main private founder Munich Re Group, brought together 130 key stakeholders (both public and private) and distinguished experts from over 40 countries. The meeting made clear what GEM's goals and benefits are, what the workplan for the coming five years looks like and what has been done so far. It was a forum for discussion on GEM's future implementation and many more issues. The meeting furthermore facilitated focused meetings on the Regional Initiatives which will feed into GEM, but also on the involvement of International Agencies / Organizations.
This first global meeting since the constitution of the GEM Foundation in March 2009 was called a success by many of its participants and reinforced the need for an independent, uniform standard for calculating earthquake hazard and risk as well as for a critical instrument to support decisions and actions to reduce earthquake losses worldwide.
